Indigo Studio is the creative engine of Indigo Books & Music Inc., Canada's largest book, gift and specialty toy retailer.  The 25-person studio team designs home décor, stationery and gifts with a focus on the lifestyle of the engaged reader.  It needed an environment that could function as both a design workshop and a display venue to highlight their latest product collections.

Our design creates an integrated concept comprised of studio workshops, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, extensive storage for materials samples, and a 'picnic' pantry.  All of these areas serve as display venues through the use of visually linked zones, structurally reinforced display walls, flexible lighting systems, and movable furniture which allows the spaces to be reconfigured as needed.

The iconic features of this cast iron loft building-- exposed brick walls, cast iron columns, and tall barrel vaulted terra cotta ceilings-- were exposed and celebrated throughout the space.

Four times a year, the studio is transformed for Market Week when retail buyers come to examine the latest design collection.  Although the themes for Market Week are seasonal and the products are always changing, we wanted the energy of the design studio team and its processes to be exposed to the visitor so they would understand the talent behind the products.  As you walk through the display areas, glimpses of the studio workshop hover in the backdrop as a reminder of the creative spirit of the company and its commitment to authentic, well crafted design.  Thus, the creative process, which usually remains behind the scenes, is also showcased.

The Indigo studio embodies the spirit of the company. It marries clever & witty design and innovation with craft and an attention to detail.
